While this is not related to our sailing, it is part of
our adventure. The Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club has been
working with Eternal Reefs, Inc. to build an artificial reef off
the coast of Sarasota, Florida. Capt'n Harry and I were
honored to be a part of the Eternal Reef Dedication to Capt.
Tony. There were several other reef balls dropped that
day, all dedicated by Parrot Head clubs throughout Florida,
including one by the
Tampa Bay Parrot Head Club, in honor of its
founders, Capt'n Harry and Sarah Sunshine. This was an
incredible event, so we wanted to share it with you. Each
Eternal Reef is adorned with a bronze plaque in honor of the
person or persons it is dedicated to.
There were too many photos
for me to caption them all. While I believe the pictures
tell a pretty good story, I will try to briefly describe what
happened on July 18, 2009:
There were several members
of Capt. Tony's family present, and some of his ashes were
placed in the Eternal Reef the day before. There were
small "dedication" reef balls available to decorate with flowers
and toss overboard in honor of whomever the Eternal Reef is
dedicated to. The Eternal Reefs are dropped into the water
and later positioned by divers. However, Capt. Tony's
Eternal Reef was floated down this day with a 21 diver salute
and positioned on the reef.
The reef has been under construction for several years and there
is life there. So if you're in the area and you are a
diver - it's worth seeing. (I'll get the coordinates and put
them on the site ASAP)
